Design Gala at the Soho House in Berlin

"The Major German Brands" – a publication of the German Design Council was presented at a festive design gala in the Soho House in Berlin on 19 September 2019 .The book title of this year: "Future. Innovation. Design.". PHOENIX is proud to be one of the big German Brands 2020.

The Design Gala welcomed well-known guests from design, business, politics, culture and science. The greeting came this year from Hartmut Esslinger, designer and founder of frog design. For us a special pleasure as the career of the founders of PHOENIX, Andreas Haug and Tom Schönherr, went hand in hand with Hartmut Esslinger and frog design. PHOENIX has been a founding member of the German Design Council for many years. Silvia Olp, Head of Communications at PHOENIX, represented the PHOENIX team in Berlin very well. We are pleased that as a design and innovation studio, in this publication we are allowed to tell about our attitude, values and also about the responsibilities we have as designers. Also thank you to the German Design Council to speak about Brand and Design as a success factor, and to make the interests of companies and designers worldwide visible. The book "The major German brands" is available now. More information here >>>

China delegation at PHOENIX in Stuttgart. Yes, we speak Chinese! Our designers Yibing Ren and Yishu Tan (left in the picture) live and work in Stuttgart. They were able to inform the young entrepreneurs very well about the secret of the worldwide success of PHOENIX.

The great interest in Design Made in Germany is unbroken. How do you bring brand into the product? How important is team spirit? What is behind logic, morality and magic? For pretzels and overlooking the vineyards on the Rotenberg, Yibing and Yishu have revealed our secret of success. What must remain secret, however, remains secret - photography ban is of course accepted. Thanks to Designflow for the excellent organization and the great enthusiasm of the guests at PHOENIX.

YO-YO – a Special Kind of Talent Promotion. “Design a Yo-Yo!” More than 170 Phoenix Design Academy interns have worked on this challenge to date, and each yo-yo is surprisingly different. These yo-yos are the visible result of talent promotion filled with life. All yo-yos were created under comparable conditions: at the end of a sixmonth internship, over the course of two days. As to the concept and its realisation, the up-and-coming designers can tap the know-how of the experienced product designers, user experience designers as well as surface designers and model-makers, and get their support in all areas. The final presentation in front of the entire design team is also part of the assignment.

Phoenix Design Academy - cyc empowering cyclists

Cycling in urban areas is becoming increasingly popular. As part of his bachelor thesis, Christoph Wackher has developed a sustainable concept which among others optimizes the daily cycle routes according to personal preferences. The cyc service could complement existing general micro mobility solutions smart devices.

The cyc service is controlled via an app that corresponds to a data carrier on the bicycle. The app provides digital access to your own cycling behavior as well as daily updates (big data). At the same time, information gained by all users can be the basis for general infrastructural measures. As an IoT solution, "cyc empowering cyclists" brings together the different requirements of the various parties involved in the system.

With the "subtle shadow" concept, Tiantian Xu has succeeded in creating a luminaire design that controls the individual lighting requirements and also integrates acoustically effective elements.

The shadow lamp satisfies individual need of light and shade. Acoustically effective paper technology with grooves on the surfaces is used for sound insulation, the fine shadow stripes throw a subtle calm on the table. Paired with an OLED plate and bending sensor as well as flexible spring steel links, the subtle form of "subtle shadow" adds that extra touch of poetry that also enriches the office environment.

  • New Members of the VDID

    New Members of the VDID

The VDID Verband Deutscher Industriedesigner [Association of German Industrial Designers] promotes the development of the profession through its encompassing forum. Since June 2019, Andreas Diefenbach, Managing Partner, and Jens Wingerath, Design Business Manager, both with Phoenix Design, are members of this association – and they want to achieve important goals, as they state in this interview.

As Managing Partner of Phoenix Design and as a designer, Andreas Diefenbach attends to international brands in their strategic innovation and design process.

Why have you become a member of VDID?
Like no other country, Germany represents industrialisation and the corresponding profession of the industrial designer. At the same time, the VDID is the only association in our design discipline where we can truly experience and shape exchange and reflexion. As a designer an design entrepreneur in a studio that's relevant for German design, I feel committed to be part of this community – in order to put the quality and the value of design to the test time and time again, and in order to develop this branch of our profession further with lots of energy, curiosity, vision, courage, but also a critical mindset.

How do you view the development of industrial design?
Design work is increasingly driven by innovation. Customers no longer merely expect a purely stylistic new product design, but they call for the holistic shaping of a product experience that makes sense and that's emotional. The user needs are investigated through extensive research, workshops, and iterative processes. In combination with new digital touchpoints, projects become more complex, more multi-facetted, and more strategic. Increasingly, the solitary product is only part of the overall product experience, which changes the classic role of the designer to being the conductor of various disciplines. We at PHOENIX permanently change ourselves and our partners in order to ensure the substantial further development and future-readiness on both sides.

Jens Wingerath is Design Business Manager with a focus on New Business, automotive and product design at Phoenix Design, Stuttgart.

Why have you become a member of VDID?
During my further education in Design Leadership at Grow, I was privileged to make the acquaintance of Vice President Andreas Enslin and further VDID members. The exchange about design and professional experiences outside of our studio was a very valuable experience for me. As a strong association, the VDID also makes attractive offers for promoting young talent and for showcasing Stuttgart as a design location, something I want to focus on in my work. In our region, we have a high density of powerful agencies and international brands which need an infusion of extraordinary up-and-coming design talent.

How do you view the development of industrial design?
Designers are facing increasingly high and complex demands. Design is being discussed on a C-Management level in the big groups of companies as a strategically decisive competitive edge; the discipline itself is more specialised and more fragmented than ever. To launch and lead such a complex design process calls for well-founded expert knowledge. Also, today, purpose and importance of a product precede its formal design. By means of digitisation, we are increasingly shaping brand experiences in a cyber-physical ecosystem across all touchpoints.

    About VDID:
The VDID Verband Deutscher Industrie Designer e.V. [Association of German Industrial Designers] creates the basis for a broad-based dialogue, its members participating in an excellent network. It provides orientation, illustrates the effects of design, takes a public stance and thus promotes both the individual and the general development of industrial designers. | www.vdid.de

  • The future of wellbeing

    The future of wellbeing

“Make it digital” was the clear-cut assignment. But what does this really mean in the shower and in the bathroom? Which path is the right one for hansgrohe to take? With Rainfinity, PHOENIX has created a shower family as well as conclusive services with RainTunes around the hansgrohe brand – always with a clear focus on the user.

The solution that has thus come about is individual, realistic, transforming for hansgrohe, and at the same time users will be surprised and enthusiastic. Taking a shower is both hygienic and relaxing, and it is a very personal ritual which should accommodate a wide range of ever changing needs. From an invigorating start into each new day via the revitalising cool-down after sports all the way to a relaxing calm-down for a good night’s sleep. Each RainTune scenario is in synch with water temperature and jet intensity, and controls lighting, music, and other multimedia applications. This allows for expressing a practically unlimited number of shower experiences. The scenarios were developed in close collaboration with neurologists, physiotherapists, dermatologists, aroma therapists and sound designers. PHOENIX has thus managed to create a novel and perfectly adjusted shower experience – product plus services from a single source.
