    Three Winners from China

    This year, the Hansgrohe Design Prize by iF followed the motto “Future Living: Innovative Forms of Using Water in Tomorrow’s Kitchen”. For the seventh time, this international prize for up-and-coming design talent was awarded by Hansgrohe SE and hosted by iF in Hannover. Andreas Haug, Phoenix Design Managing Partner & Founder, was part of the panel of expert jurors who selected the winners.

    493 concepts were submitted for the competition, of which 165 made it onto the “final list”. Three of the five prize-winning concepts for “Using water in the kitchen” were from design talents from China.

    Phoenix Design has been designing products and interactions for clients in China for years. In 2017, we expand our presence by opening a studio in Shanghai. It is precisely this outstanding design intelligence and the tangible innovation power that make this market so exciting.

  • Juicy Bites á la Pecha Kucha

    Juicy Bites á la Pecha Kucha

    On behalf of the Ministry of Economics, Energy, Transport and Regional Development of the State of Hesse, Hessen Trade & Invest GmbH was extending an invitation to designers, producers and material manufacturers to attend an event on 23 May 2017 between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Offenbach Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK). On the topic of “Additive Production and Material Innovations” as part of the event series MATERIAL FORMT PRODUKT [Material Forms Product], Lun Yeh, Product Designer with Phoenix Design, held a presentation about “Juicy Bites”, the personalised Smart Snack that comes out of a 3D printer.

    This half-day event discussed the application potentials of additive production processes in a design context, getting the participants in touch with material innovations in 3D printing. After introductory remarks by Prof. Frank Zebner, Head of the DIIO Design Innovation Institute Offenbach, about innovations in 3D printing brought about by designers, the presentations commenced.

    Lun Yeh used the “Pecha Kucha” format, presenting 20 slides of 20 seconds each – Japanese presentation technique met Design. “Juicy Bites” from the 3D Food Printer – product designer Lun Yeh developed this during his time at the Phoenix Design Academy. It is a concept using a 3D printer and conveying “values” in terms of how to handle and treat food. The ingredients for the Smart Snack are fruit and vegetables which no longer live up to conventional aesthetical concepts and that have thus been rejected by the market. Depending on the respective daily task, the snack gets personalised and will supply the most important vitamins which otherwise might be left out in a normal everyday diet.

    In 2016, his diploma thesis finished at Top 3 rank of the 3D Pioneers Challenge.     Interview in “WirtschaftsWoche” Magazine

    It’s nice when a business magazine show an interest in design. Thorsten Firlus-Emmrich, editor with “WirtschaftsWoche”, visited Phoenix Design in Stuttgart. Andreas Diefenbach, Design Business Manager, and Silvia Olp, Head of Communications at Phoenix Design, talked with him, showed him around the studio, and provided insights into Phoenix Design’s mode of thinking and working.

    Thorsten Firlus-Emmrich asked questions e.g. about: How does the exchange between clients and design studio look like? Against “tunnel vision”: What’s the added value of an external design studio compared to an in-house studio? 30 years of Phoenix Design and more than 30 years of Hansgrohe – how can one sustainably shape the success of a brand by providing always fresh innovations up to this day?     The End - or not?

    The end – when is a project finished? This is the seminar topic that students from the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG Karlsruhe) discussed with Product Designer Alvaro Witt. The designer related how we at Phoenix Design define the end of a project. He then gave our visitors a guided tour around the studio and the Design Modelling Workshop.

    Dr. Oliver Herwig, lecturer at HfG Karlsruhe, accompanied the students. Here’s his conclusion:

    The end will come. Guaranteed. But we are so engrossed in making and creating that we don't really think about when a project is truly finished. Is it the moment when the last instalment payment is in the bank? Or when the client nods? When all time allotments have been used up, and everybody's nerves are on edge? All too often, we define ourselves in relation to outside factors. So when does a project really feel complete?

    To find out more, the seminar “The End” at HfG Karlsruhe visited Phoenix Design in Stuttgart and received interesting insights into the daily workings of a successful design studio. How are products and services really created? Which tools do designers use, and how do they allocate their time and their resources? Just this: Apparently, their needs to be a balance between creative work and a fixed structure, between time management and flow. The surprising thing about this: Phoenix has no use for that notorious 24-hour end-of-project stress injection. Those who have not slept well and who are not wide awake can no longer be creative. And the end? Well, it's often the beginning of a long-lasting partnership which will reach far beyond any one concrete project. NB: A designer’s work is never done.

    On 8 May 2017, Phoenix Design welcomes Efrat Friedland in Stuttgart at our Design Forum. Friedland is a designer who over the past 15 years has focussed on materials and technologies in architecture and industrial design. At Phoenix Design, she will showcase the materials and processes of her projects and relate in detail about sustainable and intelligent materials.

    With her experience as a materials specialist, Efrat Friedland is a sought-after speaker at international conferences and has taught her trade at numerous academies. In Israel, where she comes from, she founded and managed iMatter, the first and to date only materials library in the country.

    The Design Forum is an internal further education platform taking place every other month. Experts from different areas of the industry share their experiences on current trends, technologies and future topics with our staff. The platform thrives on peer-to-peer communication and an open exchange in order to learn from each other.

    The aed Society for the Advancement of Architecture, Engineering and Design in Stuttgart published their second book by the beginning of 2017 including reports on activities, events and their support of young talents. Well-known personalities of these branches from Stuttgart area gave an interview, as do Andreas Haug and Tom Schönherr, both Founders and Managing Partners of Phoenix Design.

    “More than 700 design prizes and 400 of these over the past five years. What is the secret to this success?

    Andreas Haug: Basically it is our own requirement to offer the highest quality design services. We are usually able to generate innovative and contemporary designs using well-founded insights, specific research and precise analysis as well as a strategic concept. We need to work out what users want! Thus, our work provides not only value for money, but brings our clients, in particular, economic success.

    Your design studio is growing. You now have an office in Munich. Why Munich?

    Tom Schönherr: This second location is the cornerstone of our growth strategy. We have been able to increase our expertise and manpower in both product design and, most importantly, in interaction design. Munich is a good location for this – it is home to a alrge creative scene, especially in the digital field. Munich is very well connected internationally and our clients from Asia enjoy visiting our studio in Munich.

    Digitalization is going from strength to strength. How does Phoenix Design adjust itself to this, or how large is the proportion of employees working in this area at the moment?

    Andreas Haug: It is interesting that a brand is no longer mainly experienced via a product but also very much via digital interfaces. Thus, digitalization gives design the chance to generate different, new experiences. It offers a brand an additional value with respect to the product and services for its users. We at Phoenix Design have already been looking at product and interface design from a holistic perspective for many years, even before our clients were becoming aware of it. Today, we are implementing our concept of integral design, which incorporates a holistic physical and digital approach, with a large number of specialized employees.

    The “hidden champions” of the region, including Hansgrohe, Duravit, Interstuhl, Trumpf and Zeiss, have been your clients for many years. What do these companies have in common?

    Tom Schönherr: These companies share a pronounced culture of innovation. They strive for continued development in both large and small things. In our long-term, collaborative partnership, we are able, time and again, to create substantial additional benefits through our useful innovations. Whether it is the iF Design Award, the Red Dot Award or the German Design Award, these companies regularly receive design prizes for their products – and, of course, we are very pleased about that.”

  • Want Good Usability and UX?

    On 28 April 2017, Johannes Schäfer, Interaction Design Team Manager, will speak at the Workshop IMAGINE SURGERY at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. The two-day lecture series is the first of two planned workshops; the next will take place in 2018 in Boston, Massachusetts.

    As one of the five contributors in Session 2 – Technological Visions, Clinical Demands, Usability Challenges from 11:30 am through 1:00 pm, Phoenix Design will participate.

    In his speech entitled "Want Good Usability and UX? Aim at the heart of Users, Technology and Demand", Johannes Schäfer presents innovative medical products and the design processes leading up to them.

    All too often, there is a gap between users and manufacturers of medical devices. A user-centred design process unites stakeholders and beneficiaries in a multi-disciplinary design team in order to balance and mediate the different interests (business, technology, usage) – by comprehending and compiling user needs, by evaluating prototypes, and by (co-)designing better solutions which are then fine-tuned taking into account business considerations, and optimized as part of an iterative process. 

    Johannes Schäfer is co-responsible for medical design at Phoenix Design. In his speech, he will discuss the user-centred process, taking several projects as cases in point.

  • Bicycle Brand Contest 2017

    Bicycle Brand Contest 2017

    The Closing Date for this year’s Bicycle Brand Contest was 13 April 2017. Exactly 200 years after the invention of the bicycle, the German Design Council offers – for the second time – awards honouring outstanding product and communication design in the bicycle industry. The focus of this international competition is on accomplished staging and execution of brand management and communication.

    Andreas Haug, Managing Partner and founder of Phoenix Design, is part of the jury, and he is a passionate cyclist himself. When judging design, he pays particular attention to the quality of each detail, to subtleties in designing shape transitions even in the smallest components, and to holistic design.

    “What I notice from a design perspective in the bicycle market in general is that there are still component manufacturers and frame manufacturers. This is the reason why the harmonious overall design of a product, as we know it from the automotive sector, is often not attained in a bicycle. From a user point of view, I'd wish for a higher level of integration of components and functions”, said Andreas Haug about the Contest 2016. We are excited about his verdict this year.

    The jurors meet on 25 April 2017, the prizes will be awarded in the fall. In addition to awards in 18 categories, there will be five special awards: Innovation of the Year, Team of the Year, Brand of the Year, Agency of the Year and Ad of the Year. The special honorary award Brand Manager of the Year will be handed over to an individual for outstanding corporate achievement.

    European Product Design Award 2017

    The European Product Design Award honours the best design products worldwide, aiming at driving and enhancing the international appreciation of design. Each submitted product was tested by the panel of jurors in terms of form, function and innovation. Phoenix Design will be able to receive a total of five awards at the award winning ceremony on 12 April 2017 at the European Parliament in Brussels.

    One GOLD award will be given to Phoenix Design for the machine portfolio comprising TruBend TruPunch TruLaser by our client Trumpf, and another GOLD award for the Talis Select S series of bathroom fittings by Hansgrohe.

    SILVER will be awarded to Phoenix Design for the service robot Care-O-bot4 developed in cooperation with Fraunhofer IPA, for the Kobold VR 200 vacuum robot by Vorwerk, and for the workplace chair NEON by Interstuhl.

    Salone del Mobile with SUMMERA

    The world of design meets in Milan, Italy on 4–9 April 2017 at the Salone del Mobile, one of the leading trade shows worldwide for design and architecture. Here, design-oriented manufacturers from around the globe present their most recent trends and designs. Shapes from Munich participates in the exhibition with a star: SUMMERA by Phoenix Design.

    The suspended luminaire SUMMERA sums up Scandinavian design culture – the reduced and clear design language is the archetype of an industrial luminaire of former times. It presents itself playfully light, with clear shapes, serene colours (trend colours rosé, gold, silver, white, and black – varnished or matte), and with uncomplicated functions. At this year’s German Design Award, this luminaire was honoured as a “winner”. The panel of jurors particularly noted the simple, patented mechanism for changing the magnetic canopy via its magnetic docking principle.

    Integrating sustainability into the product design process already at an early stage will become ever more important in the future, and we at Phoenix Design are moving forward on this route with heart and mind. What it means to integrate green ideas right from the very start, and which innovation potential this brings about is related by Felix Mattes, Senior Interaction Designer at Phoenix Design, in his Interview with Susanne Volz of ecocircle concept.


    Susanne Volz: Phoenix Design has developed into a veritable institution in industrial and product design over the past nearly 30 years. Do you think this represents a special responsibility for the coming and sustainable development of products and consumption?

    Felix Mattes: With our clients, we are often integrated into the development process for their products and services in a central position.

    Since we identify 100 per cent with our work, we naturally feel a sense of co-responsibility for the effect a product unfolds in its various dimensions, whether socially, ecologically or economically. One of the reasons our clients give their orders to us is because they appreciate our consulting. That’s why we automatically feel a great sense of responsibility.

    Since its foundation by Andreas Haug and Tom Schönherr, Phoenix Design has been realising its claim to make products better – not only on an aesthetical level.

    We think that taking sustainability into account and integrating it into our processes is getting more and more important. On the one hand, neither our clients nor we can withdraw from global change. On the other hand, we represent design that’s oriented towards the user and typical for the brand. More and more consumers want to know not only which functions a product has, but also in which way and in which region it was produced, and which ecological impact or dividend it represents. At the same time, many of our clients have anchored sustainability as a KPI into their brand.

    In order to live up to our claim of delivering brand-typical design, we fill the values in a product or service with life. That's why we understand sustainability not as a factor of hygiene that’s “nice to have”, but rather as innovation potential which we tackle in a targeted manner in order to uncover opportunities for innovation.     At Medtec Europe 2017, the annual specialized trade fair for medical technology taking place in Stuttgart, Johannes Schäfer, Phoenix Design Team Manager Interaction Design, and Nadja Goldfuß, Marketing Services, Hirschmann Laborgeräte, speak about Medical Design. The side event “Meet & Match – Design in Medical Technology” takes place on 5 April 2017 from 9:30am through 2:00pm at the Messe Stuttgart Trade Fair Centre.

    How can designers contribute to corporate success by transforming user needs into successful products? How do you create brand identity in over-saturated markets by successfully integrating design competence into corporate processes?

    iF Ranking Creative 2017

    In 2017, Phoenix Design is able once again to successfully defend its No. 1 position among external design studios in the international iF ranking creative. On sixth place in the overall ranking, Phoenix Design has been able to even improve its position compared to the previous year and is one of the top addresses for innovative design in Germany.

    With more than 750 design awards, Phoenix Design continues to be one of the leading independent design studios worldwide. The international renown of the iF Design Award is made obvious by its attracting 5,575 submissions from 59 countries this year. The independent panel of jurors comprising experts from all around the globe gives the competition its particular importance.

    “The economic aspect of such an award is very important; but the award also has a radiating effect towards the general public, thus helping to create awareness about good design which changes our everyday culture. 500 years from now, people will visit museums and look at those things which for us today are articles of daily use, understanding them as tokens of 21st century culture”, predicts Tom Schönherr, Phoenix Design Managing Partner.

    Phoenix Design at the “Bayerischer Hof”

    Since a few days ago, the proprietary channel at the hotel "Bayerischer Hof" broadcasts the salon talk “Technology and Games – about the Pleasures of Lateral Thinking”. With host Nina Ruge as moderator, this topic was discussed by Andreas Haug, Managing Partner & Founder of Phoenix Design, and Alexander Schlaubitz, Vice President Marketing with Lufthansa.

    Do we have any freedom left for lateral thinking? This turned out to be the most important question during the second salon talk of the four-part series Talking about Style and Posture. “The salon talks offer a great opportunity for partners and sponsors to present their brand and to engage in networking with an exclusive target audience”, says Simone Nickl of Nickl-PR, Projekte für Wirtschaft und Kultur [projects for business and culture].


    The audience was invited to reflect once again about the importance of intuition. “Real lateral thinkers can be quite taxing, since they will first of all utter things which surprise you. But for me, that’s an indicator that somebody has really thought something through, and I take it as an incentive to listen quite closely”, says Andreas Haug of Phoenix Design.

    Interaction Design Team Is Growing

    Sandra Heinzen, Lead Designer User Experience/User Interface Munich (left), and Désirée Bein, Interaction Designer (right), now support the Phoenix Design Team in Stuttgart and Munich.

    Sandra Heinzen can draw on more than nine years’ experience in Digital Product and Service Design in her new leadership role. As Senior Art Director, she worked for Europe’s most successful digital agencies and realised projects for renowned corporations like Allianz, BMW, Lufthansa and Disney. Besides this, Sandra is Creative Director for the speech series TEDxTUM, is responsible for the communication at IxDA Munich and looks after design and organisation of similar formats.

    For her, the thrilling thing about Interaction Design – in contrast to pure Web or App Design – is being able to interact and find solutions at different touchpoints. “Designing systems – with the product, around the product, and of course the product itself – including all digital design disciplines like IXD, UX, UI and Motion Design, that's a challenge which I love to face each and every day”, as she describes her job. Moreover, our digital world is changing so fast that there are new things to discover every day: new technologies, new tools, new methods. “That’s reflected in our design and in our workflow.”

    Désirée Bein is an Interaction Designer in Stuttgart and belongs to the same team, sharing the futuristic spirit. “The ground-breaking and comprehensive possibilities of digitisation with which we can shape the world around us” make her work unique. She is especially thrilled by the complexity and user-centricity of the projects.

    Désirée Bein studied Industrial Design at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart and at ASP Warszawa in Poland. She wrote her diploma thesis at the Intuity Media Lab in Stuttgart and gathered experiences in furniture design with Burkhard Vogtherr Design as well as in the automotive industry. Her special contribution at Phoenix Design will comprise her ability to grasp and survey complex holistic designs at the interface between physical and virtual world. Her free time, however, is spent in the analog mode on the soccer pitch, as player and coach.

    iF Design Award 2017 - Gold for AXOR Uno

    Phoenix Design and their client AXOR Hansgrohe win the coveted iF Gold Award for the new AXOR Uno Zero and Uno Select product line. During the award-winning ceremony taking place on 10 March 2017 at the “BMW World” in Munich, Phoenix Design – represented by Design Business Manager Andreas Diefenbach (2nd f. l.) was honoured to accept the iF sculpture.

    Together with Silke Giessler, Head of AXOR Brand Marketing, Jan Heisterhagen, Vice President Product Management and Benjamin Holzer, Product Manager Faucets (all of Hansgrohe SE), he received the award on stage. Only 75 iF Gold Awards in total were bestowed at that evening. „Easy to use and utterly puristic, the single-lever mixer dazzles with its simplicity. The AXOR Uno series is a bathroom faucet for those with the courage to embrace reduction. With beauty combined with superior functionality, this is a timeless design", said the top-class jury as justification for AXOR Uno Zero and Select.

    In addition, Phoenix Design and Hansgrohe received another 7 iF Design Awards in the Product Design category. The winners are:

    Welcome for the next 6 months – our new Phoenix Design interns have arrived: Leonie, Lena, Agnes, Benny, Marvin, Tony (from left to right) and Valérie, connected from our studio in Munich precisely for this photo.

    They come from all over Germany. Studying in Stuttgart, Schwäbisch Gmünd, Pforzheim, Darmstadt, Munich and Berlin, our interns arrived on 1 March 2017 at Phoenix Design in order to contribute and expand their knowledge and skills in Product Design, Interaction Design and CGI.   

    During the first two weeks, they went through a workshop together with our mentors, and they drafted their first project. Taking two companies as an example, our interns have designed different smart watches – one group for mobile gaming, the other with a user focus on elderly people.

    We hope they will be having a good time and wish they can gather valuable experiences at Phoenix Design.

    For the opening day of ISH, the largest and most important beacon trade fair of the sanitary industry, Bernd Eigenstetter, Phoenix Design Managing Director, has been invited as speaker at the AXOR Talk. Focussing on the question of “Smart Hotel Rooms: How Digital Do Hotel Bathrooms Need to Be?”, he will be discussing individual needs of hotel guests with two other experts from interior design and product design. Each of them will contribute their very own perspective.

    What do guests and hotel operators expect of a modern hotel bathroom? Which challenges do architects have to face when planning “smart” hotel bathrooms? What are the current trends?

    Phoenix Design is one of the most successful “Interface Design” design studios worldwide, and Bernd Eigenstetter provides the “digital” expertise for this talk panel. He will talk about product intelligence in general: What are all the things that are possible? And what really makes sense?

    AXOR Talk with Bernd Eigenstetter

    "The new bathroom: smart? revolution?” – that's the title of the AXOR Talk taking place on Thursday, 9 March 2017, from 11 am to 12 noon, at the Deutsches Museum/MCBW Forum in Munich. Bernd Eigenstetter, Phoenix Design Managing Director and also responsible for the Interaction Design, is invited to present his “digital” expertise as one of the talk guests.

    The panel will debate how digital a bathroom can, should or must be. How “smart” ought products for bathrooms be, considering people think of it as their refuge? It is a place in which to relax and refresh. On top of which, it is also the room with the longest “life span” of any house. How can the various products help make a bathroom genuinely “smart”?

    Katharina Altemeier will host the discussion with Stefan Hoske, Senior Consultant Architecture and Design, AXOR/Hansgrohe, and designer Werner Aisslinger.

    Bernd Eigenstetter will talk about product intelligence in general: How does the design world react to the digital requirements? The bathroom of tomorrow must be more than just a fad, it needs to find answers to demographic change. In terms of technology and design – anything is possible. But the question to ask is: What does really make sense?

    This AXOR Talk is the third event within the scope of the Munich Creative Business Week that Phoenix Design will take part in.

    On 5 March 2017 Phoenix Design will already be represented at the MCBW Forum by Joon-Mo Lee, Design Strategy Manager, and his speech "Robotics: Yesterday Today Tomorrow". On 7 March 2017, Phoenix Design will conduct its own Design Talk "Smart Robots Making of" in its Munich studio.
